Day 2: The Nineties Had QR Codes

In a vintage clothes shop in Wrocław's Nadodrze district, Julia (A), a seventeen-year-old customer with a lot of questions, talks to Paweł (B), a student working behind the counter.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Przepraszam, ta kurtka to podobno „oryginał z lat dziewięćdziesiątych”. To skąd wszywka z kodem QR?

    Excuse me, this jacket is supposedly 'an original from the nineties'. So how come it's got a sewn-in label with a QR code?

    Lata dziewięćdziesiąte były bardzo postępowe, proszę pani. Wyprzedzały swoje czasy, zwłaszcza w kwestii kodów.

    The nineties were very forward-looking, miss. Ahead of their time, especially when it came to codes.

    A dwie ulice stąd, w sieciówce, wiszą identyczne, trzy razy tańsze. Mam zdjęcia obu metek.

    And two streets away, in a chain store, there are identical ones on the rails, three times cheaper. I've got photos of both price tags.

    W związku z pani pytaniem mogę jedynie poinformować, że towar pochodzi z legalnych źródeł. A pani to w ogóle kto?

    With regard to your question, I can only inform you that the goods come from legitimate sources. And who are you, anyway?

    Keep your voice down, I'm begging you. The boss is in the back room, and I don't want to get sacked just before my exams.

    Czyli jednak coś jest na rzeczy. Mogę pana zacytować, oczywiście bez nazwiska?

    So there is something in it after all. Can I quote you? Without your name, of course.

    Cytować nie. Ale gdyby pani przypadkiem stała w czwartek o szóstej przy bramie od podwórza, zobaczyłaby pani, skąd się biorą nasze „oryginały”.

    Quote me, no. But if you happened to be standing by the courtyard gate at six on Thursday, you'd see where our 'originals' come from.
