Day 25: Suspended Until Chapter Three
In a café in Poznań's Jeżyce district, near the university, Karolina (A), a regular who comes in every morning with her laptop, asks the barista, Emilia (B), about the one 'suspended coffee', paid for in advance for someone in need, pinned to the board.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Przepraszam, na tablicy wisi jedna kawa zawieszona. Komu właściwie przysługuje?
Excuse me, there's one suspended coffee on the board. Who exactly is entitled to it?
-
B
Osobom w potrzebie.
People in need. It's hardly proper to claim it in a cashmere scarf.
-
A
Szalik jest z lumpeksu, a ja jestem doktorantką z historii sztuki. Bardziej potrzebującej osoby pani dziś nie obsłuży.
The scarf's from a second-hand shop, and I'm doing a PhD in art history. You won't serve anyone more in need today.
-
B
Only you sit here every day from nine over a single espresso, as if this were your office.
-
A
Because it is my office. At the faculty I share a room with three other PhD students and a ficus that gets more light than I do.
-
B
In that case, I've got good news: this coffee is waiting for you by name, with a note from whoever paid for it.
-
A
„Dla doktorantki, która podobno pisze trzeci rozdział”. Przecież o tym „podobno” wie tylko mój promotor!
'For the PhD student who is supposedly writing chapter three.' But the only person who knows about that 'supposedly' is my supervisor!
-
B
Fundator siedzi przy oknie, za gazetą. Od kiedy pani weszła, trzyma ją do góry nogami.
Your benefactor is sitting by the window, behind a newspaper. Ever since you came in, he's been holding it upside down.
-
A
O nie, profesor Wróblewski. Należałoby się chyba przywitać, nim sam podejdzie i zapyta o przypisy.
Oh no, Professor Wróblewski. I suppose I ought to say hello before he comes over himself and asks about the footnotes.
-
B
Radziłabym raczej otworzyć laptopa, dopóki on udaje, że czyta. Drugą kawę zawiesi podobno po otrzymaniu rozdziału.
I'd suggest opening your laptop instead, while he's pretending to read. Supposedly he'll suspend a second coffee upon receipt of the chapter.
