Day 27: Two Eighteenths, One Saturday
In the corridor of a secondary school in Ełk, classmates Igor (A) and Nela (B) look for a way out when two of their friends plan their eighteenth birthday parties for the same Saturday.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Nela, it's a disaster: Zuza and Wiktoria are having their eighteenths on the same Saturday, and they both want us to pick a side.

I know. Zuza's writing to me so politely, it's as if she were delivering a diplomatic note.

A classic dispute over spheres of influence. But your brother is DJing for both of them, and he can't be in two places at once.

Szantaż to brzydkie słowo, ja wolę mówić o sankcjach. Dopóki nie usiądą do jednego stołu, żadna nie dostanie ani DJ-a, ani nas dwojga.
Blackmail's an ugly word, I prefer to call it sanctions. Until they sit down at the same table, neither of them gets the DJ or the two of us.

Dobra, piszę do obu. O ile Wika mnie od razu nie zablokuje, jutro przed matmą rozmowy pokojowe.
Fine, I'm messaging them both. Unless Wika blocks me straight away, it's peace talks tomorrow before maths.

Show me. Oh, they've both sent the same reply: they made up in five minutes and they're having a joint eighteenth.

Read to the end: 'We thank the mediators for their cooperation.' Nothing brings people together like a common enemy, and that's just what we've become.
