Day 5: Your Honour, I Object

In their kitchen in Olsztyn, Maja (A), seventeen, puts her case for going to the Open'er festival in Gdynia to her mother Beata (B), a district court judge.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Wysoki Sądzie, wnoszę o zgodę na Open'era w celu poszerzenia horyzontów. Mam dowody, świadków i dwanaście slajdów.

    Your Honour, I move for permission to go to Open'er for the purpose of broadening my horizons. I have evidence, witnesses and twelve slides.

    Sąd wysłucha, choć slajdy od dawna nie robią na nim wrażenia. Proszę, pani mecenas.

    The court will hear you, although slides stopped impressing it long ago. Go ahead, counsel.

    Po pierwsze, nocujemy u cioci Kaśki w Gdyni. Po drugie, pilnuje nas pełnoletni brat Kaśki.

    Firstly, we're staying with Kaśka's aunt in Gdynia. Secondly, Kaśka's grown-up brother will be keeping an eye on us.

  4. B

    Ten, który w sierpniu zgubił w Sopocie samochód? Sąd ma wątpliwości co do jego wiarygodności.

    The one who lost his car in Sopot last August? The court has its doubts about his reliability.

    Sprzeciw! Samochód się znalazł, a na takim parkingu każdy by się pogubił.

    Objection! The car turned up, and anyone would've got lost in a car park like that.

  6. B

    To nie amerykański serial, w polskim sądzie nikt nie woła „sprzeciw”. Należałoby też wspomnieć o powrocie od Julki o trzeciej.

    This isn't an American TV series: nobody in a Polish court shouts 'objection'. It would also be only proper to mention a certain return from Julka's at three in the morning.

    Byłam wtedy młoda i niedoświadczona. Od tamtej pory przeszłam pełną resocjalizację, co potwierdzi babcia.

    I was young and inexperienced back then. I've been fully rehabilitated since, as Grandma will confirm.

  8. B

    Babcia jest stronnicza: piecze ci drożdżówki na drogę. Sąd udaje się na naradę, czyli dzwoni do mamy Kaśki.

    Grandma is biased: she's baking you buns for the journey. The court is retiring to deliberate, that is, to ring Kaśka's mum.

  9. A

    Mama Kaśki jest już po naszej stronie, Wysoki Sądzie. Przekonałam ją wczoraj tymi samymi slajdami.

    Kaśka's mum is already on our side, Your Honour. I won her over yesterday with the same slides.
