   Panie profesorze, mam tę notę werbalną. Tylko zamiast noty między zmyślonymi państwami napisaliśmy prawdziwą: od całej klasy do pana.

   Sir, I've got that note verbale. Only instead of a note between made-up countries, we wrote a real one: from the whole class to you.

   Do mnie? No dobrze, Radomile, czytaj, byle nie wyglądała jak twój ostatni mail: „kiedy poprawa???” i trzy emotki.

   To me? All right, Radomił, read it, as long as it doesn't look like your last email: 'when's the resit???' and three emojis.

   'Class 3B presents its compliments to the civics teacher and has the honour to request that Friday's test be postponed by a week.'

   Courtesy formula, third person, not a single emoji. I would have given you top marks, but for one detail.

   Jaki szczegół? Siedzieliśmy nad tym we dwoje z Oksaną do pierwszej w nocy, sprawdzając każdy przecinek.

   What detail? Oksana and I sat over it together till one in the morning, checking every comma.

   Podpisaliście się, i to oboje, z serduszkiem pośrodku. A noty werbalnej się nie podpisuje: wystarczy parafa i pieczęć.

   You signed it, both of you, with a little heart in between. But a note verbale isn't signed: initials and a stamp are enough.

   Poważnie? No to przybijemy pieczątkę samorządu uczniowskiego i będzie git. To co, przełoży pan ten sprawdzian?

   Seriously? Then we'll slap the student council stamp on it and we're sorted. So, will you move the test?

   Odpowiem notą: „Nauczyciel przesyła wyrazy szacunku klasie trzeciej b i ma zaszczyt poinformować, że sprawdzian odbędzie się w piątek”.

   I'll reply with a note: 'The teacher presents his compliments to Class 3B and has the honour to inform them that the test will take place on Friday.'

   Czyli nie? Tyle wyrazów szacunku, żeby powiedzieć zwykłe „nie”? Słabe.

   So that's a no? All those compliments just to say a plain 'no'? Lame.

    Na tym polega dyplomacja: odmawia się tak uprzejmie, żeby druga strona jeszcze podziękowała. Ale nie wysłuchałeś mnie do końca, a liczy się ostatnie zdanie.

    That's what diplomacy is: you say no so politely that the other side even thanks you for it. But you didn't hear me out, and it's the last sentence that counts.

    Ostatnie? „Korzysta z okazji, aby ponowić wyrazy najwyższego szacunku”? To tylko formułka z szablonu.

    The last one? 'Avails itself of this opportunity to renew the assurances of its highest consideration'? That's just boilerplate from a template.

    Nie u mnie: „Nauczyciel korzysta z okazji, aby ponowić wyrazy najwyższego szacunku, i informuje, że sprawdzian obejmie wyłącznie noty werbalne”. Bez serduszek.

    Not in mine: 'The teacher avails himself of this opportunity to renew the assurances of his highest consideration, and informs the class that the test will cover notes verbales only.' No little hearts.
