Day 113: Butter Hunting with Gran

On the way back from the shops in Czeladź, nine-year-old Piotruś (A), carrying one of the bags, passes on a message from his mum to his grandmother Zenobia (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Babciu, mama powiedziała, żebym cię pilnował. Podobno chodzisz do trzech sklepów po jedno masło.

    Gran, Mum told me to keep an eye on you. Apparently you go to three shops for one pack of butter.

    Twoja mama przesadza. Po prostu chodzÄ™ tam, gdzie akurat sÄ… promocje.

    Your mum's exaggerating. I just go wherever the special offers happen to be.

    Ale ja już nie czuję rąk od tych siatek! Ile my właściwie na tym oszczędzamy?

    But these bags have made my arms go numb! How much are we actually saving on all this?

    Dzisiaj jakieś dwanaście złotych. Każdą złotówkę odkładam do słoika, aby uzbierać na coś ważnego.

    About twelve złoty today. I put every złoty in a jar, so I can save up for something important.

    Na co? Na nowy telewizor?

    For what? A new TV?

  6. B

    Na pewien czerwony rower, przed którym ktoś staje codziennie po szkole. Ale to zostaje między nami.

    For a certain red bike that somebody stops in front of every day after school. But that stays between us.

    Babciu, to chodźmy jeszcze do Lidla! Podobno masło jest tam najtańsze.

    Gran, let's go to Lidl as well, then! Apparently butter's cheapest there.
