Day 160: Ring Once and Hang Up
Outside their parents' block of flats in Kwidzyn, a young man (A) hurries down to the car where his older brother (B) is waiting, after a phone call that puzzled him.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Why did you ring and hang up straight away? I ran down in my slippers because I thought something had happened.

Nic się nie stało, celowo puściłem ci strzałkę. To znaczy: czekam pod blokiem.
Nothing's happened, I gave you a missed call on purpose. It means I'm waiting outside.

A missed call? You sound like Grandad. Normal people just text to say they're waiting.

Before unlimited phone plans came in, you paid for every minute of a call. And a missed call cost nothing.

Then the caller paid, and complained about it too. That's why my mate, the one I used to give missed calls to, never picked up.
