Day 181: A Stranger at Pump Four
At a petrol station in Myślenice, a man in his forties (A) walks up to a young driver he doesn't know (B), who is filling up his car.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Przepraszam, mogę nabić punkty za pana tankowanie? Za litr zapłaci pan trzydzieści groszy mniej.
Excuse me, could I collect the points on your fill-up? You'll pay thirty groszy less a litre.
-
B
Brzmi podejrzanie. Nikt rozsądny nie oddaje obcym zniżki, z której mógłby skorzystać sam.
Sounds fishy. Nobody in their right mind gives strangers a discount they could use themselves.
-
A
Sam już zatankowałem. Syn kazał, żebym do soboty uzbierał punkty na samochodzik z kolekcji.
I've already filled up. My son's told me to collect enough points for a toy car from the collection by Saturday.
-
B
Ile panu brakuje? Do wypłaty mam tydzień, więc nie mogę marnować ani grosza.
How many are you short? It's a week till payday, so I can't afford to waste a single grosz.
-
A
Jakieś dwieście. Stoję tu od rana, bo żona powiedziała, żebym bez samochodzika nie wracał.
About two hundred. I've been standing here since the morning, because my wife said not to come home without the toy car.
-
B
To niech pan poczeka, zadzwonię po kumpli. Do wieczora będzie pan miał całą kolekcję.
Then hang on, I'll ring my mates. You'll have the whole collection by this evening.
