Day 183: Staring Contest at Kórnik Castle

On a school trip to Kórnik Castle, a sixteen-year-old boy (A) pulls his classmate (B) aside in a room full of old portraits.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Zamieńmy się. Nie wiem, skąd ten gość z portretu wie, gdzie stoję, ale ciągle się na mnie gapi.

    Let's swap places. I don't know how that guy in the portrait knows where I'm standing, but he keeps staring at me.

    Wyluzuj, to efekt Mony Lisy. Patrzył prosto na malarza, więc teraz każdy myśli, że patrzy właśnie na niego.

    Chill, it's the Mona Lisa effect. He was looking straight at the painter, so now everyone thinks he's looking right at them.

    Serio? Mimo że wiem, że to tylko farba, i tak dziwnie się czuję.

    Seriously? Even though I know it's just paint, it still feels weird.

    Widziałam na TikToku, że sama Mona Lisa patrzy trochę w bok, choć efekt nazwano jej imieniem.

    I saw on TikTok that the Mona Lisa herself looks slightly to one side, even though the effect's named after her.

    Dobra, pani kazała opisać jeden obraz z wycieczki. Biorę tego gościa.

    OK, the teacher told us to describe one painting from the trip. I'm taking this guy.

    Him? But he freaks you out.

    Trochę. Ale przynajmniej ktoś na tej wycieczce na mnie patrzy.

    A bit. But at least someone on this trip is looking at me.
