Day 21: Shares Instead of Salary

At a small start-up in Kraków, the founder, Mr Marek Zając (A), calls a meeting with his two developers, Zuza (B) and Olek (C).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mam złą wiadomość: inwestor się wycofał. Na pensje starczy do marca.

    I've got bad news: the investor has pulled out. There's enough for salaries until March.

    A potem? Na LinkedInie jest sporo firm szukających programistów.

    And then what? There are plenty of companies on LinkedIn looking for developers.

    Zuza, daj spokój. Obiecaliśmy sobie, że zrobimy to razem.

    Zuza, come on. We promised each other we'd do this together.

    Pani Zuzanno, mogę pani zaproponować udziały zamiast części pensji.

    Zuzanna, I can offer you shares instead of part of your salary.

  5. B

    Udziały w firmie przynoszącej straty? Właściciel mieszkania nie przyjmie ich zamiast czynszu.

    Shares in a company that's losing money? My landlord won't take them instead of rent.

  6. C

    A ja biorę. Mieszkam z rodzicami, więc mogę sobie pozwolić na ryzyko.

    Well, I'll take them. I live with my parents, so I can afford the risk.
