Day 4: Written by a Machine?

During office hours at the University of Gdańsk, second-year student Natalia (A) comes to see her lecturer, Dr Ewa Wiśniewska (B), about an email she has received.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Pani doktor, podobno moja praca jest sprawdzana jeszcze raz. CoÅ› jest nie tak?

    Dr Wiśniewska, apparently my essay is being checked again. Is something wrong?

    Algorytm uznał, że część tekstu mogła napisać sztuczna inteligencja.

    The algorithm decided that part of the text might have been written by AI.

    Przecież pisałam ją samodzielnie przez cały miesiąc! Mam wszystkie notatki.

    But I wrote it on my own, over a whole month! I've got all my notes.

    Wierzę pani. Te programy często się mylą: im lepszy tekst, tym częściej.

    I believe you. These programs often get it wrong, and the better the writing, the more often they do.

    To co mam zrobić? Pisać gorzej?

    So what am I supposed to do? Write worse?

  6. B

    Broń Boże. Wystarczy, że opowie mi pani własnymi słowami, o czym pani pisała.

    Heaven forbid. All you need to do is tell me in your own words what you wrote about.
