Day 6: A Carp for Six

In the family kitchen in Kielce, Małgorzata (A) asks her grown-up daughter Julka (B) about this year's Christmas Eve.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Julka, you and Kamil are coming for Christmas Eve this year, aren't you?

    Mamo, obiecaliśmy już rodzicom Kamila, że przyjedziemy do Gdyni.

    Mum, we've already promised Kamil's parents we'd come to Gdynia.

    Rozumiem. Gdybym wiedziała wcześniej, nie zamówiłabym karpia na sześć osób.

    I see. If I'd known sooner, I wouldn't have ordered carp for six.

    Jest dopiero listopad. Ten karp jeszcze spokojnie pływa w stawie.

    It's only November. That carp's still happily swimming in its pond.

    Oczywiście, rób, jak uważasz. Babcia na pewno jakoś to przeżyje.

    Of course, do as you think best. I'm sure Grandma will survive it somehow.

    Mamo, tylko bez pretensji. Przyjedziemy w pierwszy dzień świąt i zostaniemy do niedzieli.

    Mum, no guilt trips, please. We'll come on Christmas Day and stay till Sunday.
