Day 82: Toys That Earn Their Keep

At home in Leszno, ten-year-old Kajtek (A) tells his father Arek (B) about the business he has started at school.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Dad, I've set up a start-up! I rent out Lego to my mates at five złoty a week.

    No proszę, prezes w czwartej klasie. A skąd wziąłeś tyle zestawów?

    Well, well, a CEO in Year 4. And where did you get so many sets?

    Mam swoje, a kilkanaście znalazłem na strychu, w pudle po telewizorze.

    I've got my own, and I found a dozen or so in the attic, in an old TV box.

    W pudle po telewizorze? Przecież to moje zabawki z dzieciństwa!

    In the TV box? But those are my toys from when I was a kid!

    Tylko się kurzyły, a na YouTubie mówią, że wszystko musi na siebie zarabiać.

    They were just gathering dust, and on YouTube they say everything has to earn its keep.

    Nie zbierałem ich tyle lat po to, aby twoi koledzy gubili figurki.

    I didn't spend all those years collecting them so your mates could lose the minifigures.

    Spokojnie, tato, każdy płaci kaucję. A ty możesz zostać wiceprezesem.

    Relax, Dad, everyone pays a deposit. And you can be vice-president.
