Day 93: The Manual in His Head

In the workshop where a university team builds its Mars rover, first-year student Ksawery (A) asks the team leader, Jędrzej (B), to take him to the competition in the United States.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mimo że jestem dopiero na pierwszym roku, chciałbym polecieć z wami na zawody do Utah.

    Even though I'm only in my first year, I'd like to fly out with you to the competition in Utah.

    Doceniam zapał, tylko że zawsze lecą najstarsi. Miejsc jest pięć, a chętnych kilkunastu.

    I appreciate the enthusiasm, it's just that it's always the senior students who go. There are five places and a dozen or so people who want them.

    Ale to ja napisałem program, który steruje ramieniem łazika. Kto go poprawi na pustyni?

    But I'm the one who wrote the software that controls the rover's arm. Who's going to fix it out in the desert?

    Przeszkolisz któregoś ze starszych. Parę dni wystarczy.

    You'll train one of the senior students. A few days will do.

    Przeszkolę, chociaż instrukcji jeszcze nie ma. Wszystko mam w głowie.

    I will, although there's no manual yet. It's all in my head.

    Czyli bez ciebie ramiÄ™ nawet siÄ™ nie ruszy?

    So without you the arm won't even move?

    Ruszy się, choć nie wiadomo, w którą stronę.

    Oh, it'll move, though who knows which way.
