Day 105: The Gold Card Swap
At home in Będzin, Olimpia (A), a lawyer, has a word with her nine-year-old son Wincenty (B) after a phone call from the mother of Ziemek, a first-year pupil at his school.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

Wincenty, Ziemek's mum called. Apparently you swapped cards with him, and then Ziemek cried all afternoon.

U dorosłych tak. Ale drobna umowa dziecka poniżej trzynastu lat jest ważna tylko wtedy, gdy to dziecko nie zostaje rażąco pokrzywdzone.
For grown-ups, yes. But a small deal made by a child under thirteen only counts if that child isn't grossly disadvantaged.

More or less. Ziemek has clearly lost out here, so your deal is void, and you ought to give each other your cards back.

Nie tak szybko. Wtedy będziesz miał tylko ograniczoną zdolność do czynności prawnych, a do tego nadal mamę prawniczkę.
