Day 12: Twelve Per Cent for Exclusivity

During a break in talks with a supermarket chain, Mr Wr贸bel (A), head of a pierogi factory near Bia艂ystok, confers with his sales team, Ewa (B) and Bartek (C).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Ladies and gentlemen, the chain wants a twelve per cent discount in exchange for exclusivity across the province.

    We'd drop below break-even. Five per cent is our absolute limit.

    Ewa, if we back out, the competition will take our shelf space before we're even back at the office.

    Sir, before we give way on anything, please take a look at this: their supplier has gone bankrupt.

    How do you know? That would mean they're the ones who urgently need us, not the other way round.

    Sprawdzi艂em w rejestrze. Lada dzie艅 zabraknie im towaru.

    I checked the register. Any day now they'll run out of stock.

    W takim razie kujmy 偶elazo, p贸ki gor膮ce. Wracamy na sal臋 i negocjujemy na naszych warunkach.

    In that case, let's strike while the iron's hot. We go back in and negotiate on our terms.
