Day 122: Grandma at the Box Office
At Sunday dinner in her flat in Ciechanów, Alina (A), a retired nursery school teacher, has news for her daughter Mariola (B) and her seventeen-year-old grandson Natan (C), who has a weekend job at a cinema.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

I've got news: from Saturday I'm going back to work. The cinema manager took me on the spot, because there's nobody to work weekends.

Mamo, po co ci to? Całe życie przepracowałaś w przedszkolu, należy ci się odpoczynek.
Mum, what do you need that for? You worked at the nursery school all your life, you've earned a rest.

Właśnie w tym, wnusiu. Chociaż po osiągnięciu wieku emerytalnego mogę dorabiać bez limitu, nie chodzi mi o zarobki, tylko o ludzi.
That very one, sweetie. Although now I've reached retirement age I can earn as much as I like on top of my pension, it's not about the money, it's about people.

How embarrassing. Besides, it's because of grannies like you that young people can't find jobs.

Nikt nikomu pracy nie zabiera, synku. Społeczeństwo się starzeje, a niedobór pracowników jest taki, że firmy zatrudniają zarówno licealistów, jak i emerytów.
Nobody's taking anybody's job, love. Society is ageing, and there's such a shortage of workers that companies hire both secondary school kids and pensioners.

Dobra, ale mimo że będziemy pracować w jednym kinie, udajemy, że się nie znamy. I żadnego „wnusiu”!
Fine, but even though we'll be working at the same cinema, we're pretending we don't know each other. And no 'sweetie'!
