   Good morning, Mrs Jadwiga, here's your shopping, as per the list. The butter came to more this time, because the offer's ended.

   Znowu? W telewizji ogłaszają, iż inflacja rzekomo spadła, a sklepy jak gdyby nigdy nic podnoszą ceny.

   Again? They announce on the television that inflation has supposedly come down, and the shops carry on putting prices up as if nothing had happened.

   Spadła inflacja, a nie ceny, proszę pani. Ceny dalej rosną, tylko wolniej.

   It's inflation that's come down, not prices. Prices are still going up, just more slowly.

   Młody człowieku, dwadzieścia lat spisywałam ceny dla urzędu statystycznego. Obszedłszy rano sklepy na rynku, wiedziałam o inflacji więcej niż niejeden analityk.

   Young man, I spent twenty years recording prices for the statistics office. After a morning round of the shops on the market square, I knew more about inflation than many an analyst.

   You were a price collector for Statistics Poland? Then you know the basket reflects what the average Pole spends, not your shopping list.

   I do. That's why Statistics Poland calculates a separate index for pensioners: we spend more on food, medicines and heating.
