Day 141: Which Inflation, Exactly?

At the Monday meeting of the sales team at a furniture factory in K臋pno, the head of sales (A) brings news from the board to his two young sales specialists (B and C).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Right, everyone, I'm back from the board meeting with good news: in view of inflation, we're raising the whole department's salaries by the rate published by Statistics Poland.

    Really? The last pay rise we got was back before the pandemic!

    Don't celebrate yet: Statistics Poland publishes several rates. Which one exactly do you mean?

    Najnowszy, na podstawie odczytu z pi臋tnastego. Zero przecinek dwa procent, czyli od przysz艂ego miesi膮ca ka偶dy dostanie wi臋cej.

    The latest one, based on the reading published on the fifteenth. Zero point two per cent, so from next month everyone gets more.

    Zero przecinek dwa? Panie kierowniku, to wzrost cen w por贸wnaniu z poprzednim miesi膮cem, a nie z zesz艂ym rokiem.

    Zero point two? That's the rise in prices compared with the previous month, not with last year.

    Rok do roku wychodzi kilkana艣cie razy wi臋cej. Przy mojej pensji ta podwy偶ka to niespe艂na dziesi臋膰 z艂otych na r臋k臋, czyli p贸艂 kawy na mie艣cie.

    Year on year, it comes out a dozen or so times higher. On my salary, this rise comes to just under ten z艂oty take-home, which is half a coffee in town.

    A dozen or so times? So that's why the CEO signed the request in a flash, before I'd even finished presenting it.

    Then put the request in again, with the year-on-year rate, before any of the board members reaches for a calculator.
