   Pani Jowito, przeczytałam scenariusz akademii na Trzeciego Maja. Pięknie dobrane wiersze, ale w pierwszym zdaniu jest błąd.

   Jowita, I've read the script for the Third of May assembly. Beautifully chosen poems, but there's a mistake in the first sentence.

   Jaki błąd? Przecież trzeciego maja tysiąc siedemset dziewięćdziesiątego pierwszego roku uchwalono pierwszą konstytucję na świecie.

   What mistake? It was on the third of May 1791 that the world's first constitution was passed.

   Pierwszą w Europie, ale drugą na świecie: Amerykanie uchwalili swoją cztery lata wcześniej. A za taką wpadkę oberwie się historyczce, czyli mnie.

   The first in Europe, but the second in the world: the Americans passed theirs four years earlier. And it's the history teacher who'll get it in the neck for a slip like that, meaning me.

   No dobrze, poprawię. Tylko że bez czegoś zabawnego dzieci zasną w drugiej minucie.

   Proszę bardzo: obrady nad konstytucją zaplanowano na piątego maja, ale je przyspieszono, bo wielu przeciwników reform nie wróciło jeszcze z przerwy wielkanocnej.

   Here you are: the debate on the constitution was planned for the fifth of May, but it was brought forward because many opponents of the reforms hadn't come back from the Easter recess yet.

   Czyli konstytucję uchwalono, bo opozycja przedłużyła sobie święta? Już widzę scenkę: „Przedłuż sobie majówkę jak posłowie Sejmu Wielkiego!”

   So the constitution was passed because the opposition extended their holidays? I can already see the sketch: 'Stretch your long weekend like the deputies of the Great Sejm!'

   Nie przedłużyła, po prostu na nią nie zaczekano. I proszę pamiętać, że to patriotyczna akademia, a nie kabaret: ta konstytucja przetrwała zaledwie czternaście miesięcy.

   They didn't extend anything, nobody waited for them, that's all. And please remember, this is a patriotic assembly, not a cabaret: that constitution lasted a mere fourteen months.

   Szkoda, scenka byłaby hitem. To może zostawię ją chociaż dla starszych klas?

   Shame, the sketch would have been a hit. So maybe I'll keep it at least for the older years?
