Day 25: Somebody Was Watching

In a shopping centre car park in Opole, Ryszard (A) stops Kacper (B), a young driver he has never met, who has just brushed against a parked car.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Przepraszam, widziałem, jak się pan otarł o tamtego golfa. Nie zostawi pan kartki?

    Excuse me, I saw you scrape that Golf. Aren't you going to leave a note?

  2. B

    Ledwie go musnąłem, to drobiazg. Tu stoi kilkaset aut i każde ma jakąś rysę.

    I barely touched it, it's nothing. There are hundreds of cars here and every one has a scratch somewhere.

  3. A

    Ale za tę rysę ktoś zapłaci. Uczciwość poznaje się wtedy, gdy nikt nie patrzy.

    But somebody will pay for this scratch. Honesty shows when nobody's watching.

  4. B

    Łatwo panu mówić. Stracę zniżki na OC, na które pracowałem latami.

    That's easy for you to say. I'll lose my no-claims discount, which took me years to build up.

  5. A

    Wielu kierowców płaci wtedy lakiernikowi z własnej kieszeni, żeby nie tracić zniżek.

    Plenty of drivers pay the body shop out of their own pocket in that case, so as not to lose their discount.

    A skąd mam wiedzieć, czyj to samochód? Mam tu sterczeć do wieczora?

    And how am I supposed to know whose car it is? Am I meant to hang around here till evening?

  7. A

    Nie trzeba. Właściciel właśnie z panem rozmawia, a numer do dobrego lakiernika chętnie podam.

    No need. The owner is talking to you right now, and I'll gladly give you the number of a good body shop.
