Day 36: Rehearsal on the Stairs

On the stairs of their block of flats in Częstochowa, Iwona (A) runs into her neighbour Jolanta (B), dressed up for her final interview for a branch manager's job at a cooperative bank.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Pani Jolu, ale pani elegancka! Czyżby to dziś był ten wielki dzień?

    Jola, don't you look smart! Is today the big day, by any chance?

  2. B

    Trzeci etap, z zarządem. Napisali: „Zapoznawszy się z Pani dokumentami, prosimy o przygotowanie prezentacji”.

    Round three, with the board. They wrote: "Having reviewed your documents, we ask you to prepare a presentation."

    Na pewno zapytają o lukę w życiorysie. Ma pani gotową odpowiedź?

    They're bound to ask about the gap in your CV. Have you got an answer ready?

    Powiem, że wychowując troje dzieci, nauczyłam się negocjować z ludźmi odpornymi na wszelkie argumenty.

    I'll say that bringing up three children taught me to negotiate with people immune to every argument.

    Doskonale. A jeśli prezes zapyta, czemu nie zatrudnić kogoś młodszego?

    Excellent. And if the CEO asks why they shouldn't hire someone younger?

  6. B

    Że młodsi po roku zmieniają pracę, a ja zostanę, bo mam kredyt i dzieci na studiach.

    That younger people change jobs after a year, and I'll stay, because I've got a mortgage and children at university.

  7. A

    Tylko o kredycie lepiej nie wspominać. Chociaż, jak znam bankowców, właśnie to ich przekona.

    Better not mention the mortgage, though. Then again, knowing bankers, that's exactly what will win them over.
