Day 49: The Shrinking Flat

In their rented flat in Koszalin, flatmates Klaudia (A) and Sylwia (B) are expecting a visit from their landlord, Mariusz Kędzierski (C).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Pan Mariusz idzie przez podwórko z teczką. Ostatnim razem przyniósł w niej aneks z podwyżką.

    Mr Mariusz is crossing the courtyard with his briefcase. Last time he brought an amendment to our contract in it, raising the rent.

    Spokojnie, jestem przygotowana. Czytając wczoraj artykuł o shrinkflacji, wpadłam na pewien pomysł.

    Relax, I'm ready. Reading an article about shrinkflation yesterday, I had an idea.

    Dzień dobry paniom. Nie będę owijał w bawełnę: od stycznia czynsz będzie waloryzowany o wskaźnik inflacji.

    Good afternoon, ladies. I won't beat about the bush: from January the rent will be indexed to inflation.

    Rozumiemy, wszystko drożeje. Tylko że u pana czynsz rośnie, a powierzchni użytkowej jest coraz mniej.

    We understand, everything's getting more expensive. It's just that here the rent goes up while there's less and less usable floor space.

    Absurd. Mieszkanie ma co do centymetra ten sam metraż co w dniu podpisania umowy.

    Nonsense. The flat is exactly the same size, to the centimetre, as on the day you signed the contract.

    Metraż ten sam, tylko balkon jest remontowany od marca, a pralka naprawiana od trzech tygodni.

    The same size, yes, but the balcony has been under renovation since March and the washing machine has been under repair for three weeks.

    Trafny argument. W takim razie zastosuję klasyczną shrinkflację: czynsz bez zmian, ale zabieram telewizor.

    Fair point. In that case I'll go for classic shrinkflation: the rent stays the same, but I'm taking the television.

    Umowa stoi, i tak go nie oglądamy. Pomóc panu znieść go do samochodu?

    Deal, we never watch it anyway. Shall I help you carry it down to the car?
