Day 51 of 68

Day 51: Flowers Under Polystyrene

In front of her grandmother's painted cottage in Zalipie, the village famous for its flower-painted houses, Martyna (A) tells her close friend Nina (B) about the family's plans for the house.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

  1. A

Nino, zapadła decyzja: babciny dom zostanie ocieplony, a kwiaty znikną pod styropianem.

Nina, it's been decided: Grandma's house is getting insulated, and the flowers will disappear under polystyrene.

  2. B

Żartujesz? Przecież to zabytkowa chata, o której piszą wszystkie przewodniki po Małopolsce.

Are you joking? But it's a historic cottage that every guidebook to Lesser Poland writes about.

  3. A

Babcia sama to zaproponowała. Wychowała tu pięcioro dzieci i pół wieku marzła każdej zimy.

It was Grandma's own idea. She brought up five children here and froze every winter for half a century.

  4. B

Rozumiem, ale kwiaty, dla których przyjeżdżają turyści z całego świata, to niepowtarzalne dziedzictwo. Ocieplcie od środka.

I understand, but the flowers that tourists come from all over the world to see are a unique heritage. Insulate it from the inside.

  5. A

Zalipie to nie skansen, tylko żywa wieś. Kwiaty i tak maluje się co roku od nowa.

Zalipie isn't an open-air museum, it's a living village. The flowers get repainted every year anyway.

  6. B

Na styropianie zamiast tynku? I kto je namaluje, skoro twoja babcia ledwo wchodzi na drabinę?

On polystyrene instead of plaster? And who's going to paint them, when your grandma can barely get up a ladder?

  7. A

We troje: babcia, wujek i ja. Babcia liczy, że na gładkiej ścianie wreszcie wygra „Malowaną Chatę”.

The three of us: Grandma, my uncle and me. Grandma's counting on a smooth wall to finally win her the Painted Cottage contest.
