Day 53: Headphones in the Waiting Room

In a corridor at the Institute of Psychology of the University of Silesia in Katowice, first-year student Janek (A) stops Patryk (B), an older student who helps run experiments in the department's lab.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

    Patryk, I signed up for your study to get the credits. I spent half an hour filling in boring questionnaires about how I was feeling.

    The questionnaires are a cover. We don't reveal what the study is about, since knowing it would change how the participants behave.

    To co w艂a艣ciwie badacie? Nic si臋 tam nie dzia艂o, tylko komu艣 w poczekalni rozsypa艂y si臋 papiery.

    So what are you actually studying? Nothing happened in there, except that someone in the waiting room dropped a pile of papers.

    That someone was me. We're studying who helps strangers even when nobody asks them to.

    So I came across as selfish, even though I always give up my seat to old ladies on the tram?

    Relax, the data's anonymous. But you were the only participant who didn't even look up.

    Because I had noise-cancelling headphones on! That's not indifference, it's technology.
