Day 60: Eleven Votes to One
In a caf茅 in Gorz贸w Wielkopolski, Emilia (A), who works for a large insurance company, asks the waiter, Dawid (B), about booking the back room for her team.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Dzie艅 dobry, chcia艂abym porozmawia膰 z mened偶erem o rezerwacji salki na integracj臋.
Good afternoon, I'd like to speak to the manager about booking the back room for a team night out.

B
Nie mamy mened偶era, jeste艣my sp贸艂dzielni膮 pracy. Wszyscy zarabiamy tyle samo, zar贸wno kelnerzy, jak i kucharze.
We don't have a manager; we're a workers' cooperative. We all earn the same, waiters and cooks alike.

Powa偶nie? U nas jest siedem szczebli zarz膮dzania, a zam贸wienie d艂ugopis贸w zatwierdza kilku dyrektor贸w.
Seriously? At my company there are seven levels of management, and an order for pens has to be approved by several directors.
-
B
Nad wszystkim g艂osujemy. Na ostatniej naradzie k艂贸cili艣my si臋 dwie godziny o nowe menu, po czym zostali艣my przy starym.
We vote on everything. At our last meeting we argued about a new menu for two hours, and then stuck with the old one.

Czyli nawet o rabacie dla grupy nie mo偶e pan zdecydowa膰 sam? Integracja jest ju偶 w pi膮tek.
So you can't even decide on a group discount by yourself? The team night out is this Friday.
-
B
Sam nie, ale w pilnych sprawach g艂osujemy na czacie. Da mi pani dwie minuty?
Not by myself, but we vote on urgent matters in our group chat. Could you give me two minutes?
-
A
I jak? W mojej firmie na tak膮 decyzj臋 czeka艂abym dwa tygodnie.
Well? At my company I'd wait two weeks for a decision like that.
-
B
Pi臋tna艣cie procent, jedena艣cie g艂os贸w za, jeden przeciw. Przeciw by艂em ja: w pi膮tek mam zmian臋 do p贸艂nocy.
Fifteen per cent off, eleven votes to one. The one against was me: I'm on shift until midnight on Friday.
