Day 67: Strawberries in February

At the Kraków University of Economics, students Borys (A) and Jagoda (B) present their own inflation study to Professor Irena Grabowska (C) during her office hours.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Pani profesor, w celu oszacowania inflacji co tydzień dokonywaliśmy zakupu tych samych dwunastu produktów na Starym Kleparzu.

    Professor, in order to estimate inflation, every week we purchased the same twelve products at the Stary Kleparz market.

    Wyszło nam ponad czterdzieści procent rocznie, czyli wielokrotnie więcej, niż podaje GUS. To będzie sensacja!

    We got over forty per cent a year, which is many times what Statistics Poland reports. This is going to cause a sensation!

    Zanim ogłoszą państwo, że GUS się myli, proszę mi pokazać skład koszyka.

    Before you announce that Statistics Poland has got it wrong, please show me what was in your basket.

    Chleb, masło, jajka, ziemniaki... i truskawki, gdyż Jagoda uparła się, aby był choć jeden owoc.

    Bread, butter, eggs, potatoes... and strawberries, since Jagoda insisted on at least one fruit.

    Rozumiem. A w jakim okresie prowadzili państwo pomiary?

    I see. And over what period did you take your measurements?

    Od czerwca do lutego. W lutym truskawki miał już tylko jeden sprzedawca: kilo za sześćdziesiąt złotych.

    From June to February. In February only one stallholder still had strawberries: sixty złoty a kilo.

  7. C

    Gratuluję, zmierzyli państwo nie inflację, tylko polską zimę. W związku z tym proszę powtórzyć obliczenia bez truskawek.

    Congratulations: what you measured wasn't inflation, it was the Polish winter. So please redo your calculations without the strawberries.
