Day 71: A Queue for Gold Bars

In the queue outside a bullion dealer's in Sosnowiec, Jaros艂aw (A), a middle-aged man, strikes up a conversation with Klara (B), the young woman standing in front of him.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Are you here for gold too? They say prices keep breaking records.

    In uncertain times, rising prices draw crowds. A year ago I was standing here on my own.

    Szwagier, na kt贸rym polegam w sprawach pieni臋dzy, twierdzi, 偶e z艂oto nigdy nie tanieje.

    My brother-in-law, who I rely on when it comes to money, says gold never goes down.

    Tanieje, prosz臋 pana. Po osiemdziesi膮tym roku straci艂o ponad po艂ow臋 warto艣ci i odrabia艂o straty prawie trzydzie艣ci lat.

    It does, sir. After 1980 it lost over half its value and took almost thirty years to make up the losses.

    To po co pani tu stoi? Przy takiej ostro偶no艣ci powinna pani omija膰 ten sklep szerokim 艂ukiem.

    Then why are you standing here? Someone as cautious as you ought to give this shop a wide berth.

    Przysz艂am sprzeda膰. Kupowa艂am, kiedy nikt o z艂ocie nie m贸wi艂, a sprzedaj臋, kiedy m贸wi o nim ca艂a kolejka.

    I've come to sell. I bought when nobody was talking about gold, and I'm selling now that the whole queue is talking about it.

    Czyli kolejka, w kt贸rej stoj臋, to sygna艂 do sprzeda偶y? To zwalniam miejsce i dzwoni臋 do szwagra.

    So the queue I'm standing in is a signal to sell? Then I'm giving up my place and calling my brother-in-law.
