Day 85: The Mole at the Waterworks
Over a beer after work in Głogów, Karol (A), a reporter for a local news website, meets his older brother Norbert (B), an engineer at the municipal waterworks.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Widziałeś? Mój tekst o przetargu na wymianę rur jest od rana najczęściej czytany na portalu.
Have you seen? My piece on the pipe replacement tender has been the most-read thing on the site since this morning.
-
B
Widziałem, tak jak cała firma. Wszystkie służbowe maile są teraz sprawdzane, bo prezes szuka kreta.
I have, like the whole company. All our work emails are being checked now, because the boss is hunting for a mole.

Przecież ty mi nic nie przekazałeś. No chyba że liczysz narzekanie przy niedzielnym obiedzie u mamy.
But you didn't pass me anything. Unless you count moaning over Sunday lunch at Mum's.
-
B
Narzekałem właśnie na ten przetarg. A ty, choć rzekomo nic ode mnie nie wiesz, znasz kwotę co do złotówki.
That tender is exactly what I was moaning about. And though supposedly you got nothing from me, you know the amount to the last złoty.
-
A
Bo wyniki przetargów są publikowane w internecie, razem z kwotami. Wystarczy wiedzieć, gdzie szukać.
Because tender results are published online, amounts and all. You just need to know where to look.

To po co piszesz „jak nieoficjalnie ustaliliśmy”? Teraz podejrzany jest każdy, kto ma w rodzinie dziennikarza.
Then why write 'as we have learned unofficially'? Now anyone with a journalist in the family is a suspect.
-
A
Bo tak się lepiej klika. Tajemnicze źródło wygrywa z nudnym dokumentem, mimo że dokument jest wiarygodniejszy.
Because it gets more clicks. A mysterious source beats a boring document, even though the document's more reliable.
-
B
Świetnie. A jutro o dziewiątej to ja będę się tłumaczył prezesowi z twojej stylistyki.
Great. And tomorrow at nine I'm the one who'll be answering to the boss for your turn of phrase.

Dobra, jeszcze dziś dopiszę, skąd są dane. Tylko nie mów nikomu, że moim najlepszym informatorem jest wyszukiwarka.
OK, I'll add where the figures come from before the day's out. Just don't tell anyone my best source is a search engine.
