Day 95: Not a Word to Your Mum
At the family flat in Świdnica, city bus driver Sławomir (A) asks his son Jędrzej (B), a junior doctor, to look over the results of his overnight sleep study.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

'Following the examination, an average of thirty apnoeas per hour was recorded.' Dad, that's severe sleep apnoea.

What apnoea? I'm alive and breathing, I just snore a bit, that's all.

Thirty times an hour you stop breathing, until your brain, short of oxygen, wakes you up. That's why you keep complaining about feeling drowsy at the wheel.

What sort of therapy is that? Am I supposed to sleep like a fighter pilot, in a mask with a hose?

Dokładnie: aparat tłoczy powietrze, więc gardło się nie zapada. Jak senność minie, wrócisz za kierownicę, ale do tego czasu bierzesz zwolnienie.
Exactly: the machine pumps in air, so your throat doesn't collapse. Once the drowsiness is gone, you'll be back behind the wheel, but until then you're on sick leave.
