   „Przybywszy do Buska, podróżny bierze dorożkę i każe się wieźć do Łazienek”. Dobry wieczór, to ja jestem tym podróżnym.

   'Having arrived in Busko, the traveller takes a cab and bids the cabman convey him to the Baths.' Good evening, I'm that traveller.

   Konia nie mam, ale do Łazienek pana zawiozę. Cóż to za lektura, przewodnik z czasów zaborów?

   I haven't got a horse, but I'll take you to the Baths. What's that you're reading, some guidebook from the days of the partitions?

   Zgadł pan, z tysiąc osiemset dziewięćdziesiątego szóstego. Piszę książkę o uzdrowiskach i sprawdzam, ile jego rad przetrwało.

   You've guessed it, from 1896. I'm writing a book about spa towns, and I'm checking how much of its advice has survived.

   Here you are: 'A fare from the market square costs twenty kopecks, and at night, half as much again.'

   Right down to the penny, only the currency's different. After ten at night we're on tariff two, which is half as much again.

   Carat dawno upadł, a arytmetyka ta sama! Jest też ostrzeżenie: „Strzec się należy dorożkarzy, którzy przyjezdnych wożą naokoło”.

   The Tsars are long gone, but the arithmetic's the same! There's a warning too: 'One must beware of cabmen who drive visitors the long way round.'

   Who would dare? With me it's always the shortest route, you can bank on it.

   To czemuż drugi raz mijamy to samo sanatorium? A dalej: „Jedynym uczciwym dorożkarzem jest niejaki Dudek, lubo koń jego wielce leniwy”.

   Then why ever are we passing the same sanatorium for the second time? And further on: 'The only honest cabman is one Dudek, albeit his horse is exceedingly idle.'

    Dudek? Toż to mój prapradziadek! No dobrze, dla honoru rodu liczę panu tylko dwie trzecie kursu.

    Dudek? Why, that's my great-great-grandfather! All right, for the honour of the family, I'll only charge you two thirds of the fare.
