   Syn pani Stefanii prosi, żebyśmy nad grobem powiedzieli parę słów w imieniu sąsiadów, bo mama podobno bardzo nas lubiła.

   Mrs Stefania's son is asking us to say a few words at the graveside on behalf of the neighbours, because apparently his mum was very fond of us.

   Lubiła? Przecież pisała na nas skargi do spółdzielni, odkąd tylko nauczyliśmy się kopać piłkę.

   Fond of us? She kept writing complaints about us to the housing co-op from the moment we learnt to kick a ball.

   Wiem, bo dał mi teczkę z kopiami. Posłuchaj: „W związku z nagminnym kopaniem piłki w bramę mojego garażu wnoszę o upomnienie rodziców”.

   I know, because he gave me a folder of the copies. Listen: 'In connection with the persistent kicking of a ball against the door of my garage, I request that the parents be reprimanded.'

   Ta blaszana brama dudniła jak bęben. A piłkę z balkonu oddawała dopiero po sprawdzeniu zeszytów, zarówno moich, jak i twoich.

   That tin garage door boomed like a drum. And she'd only give the ball back from her balcony after checking our exercise books, mine as well as yours.

   Mnie kiedyś załatała piłkę jak rowerową dętkę, po czym napisała skargę, że znowu gramy. Nawet skargi pisała porządnie, z kopią przez kalkę.

   She once patched up my ball like a bicycle inner tube, and then wrote a complaint that we were playing again. She wrote even her complaints properly, with a carbon copy.

   Tylko jak z tego zrobić mowę pogrzebową? Nie powiemy nad grobem, że żegnamy autorkę skarg na naszych rodziców.

   But how do we turn that into a eulogy? We can't say at the graveside that we're bidding farewell to the author of complaints about our parents.

   Czekaj, na dnie jest ostatnie pismo, z dwa tysiące dziewiątego: „W celu zapewnienia dzieciom bezpiecznego miejsca do gry w piłkę wnoszę o budowę boiska za garażami”.

   Wait, at the bottom there's the last one, from 2009: 'In order to provide children with a safe place to play football, I request the construction of a pitch behind the garages.'

   Tego boiska, na którym spędziliśmy całe gimnazjum? Byłam pewna, że to pomysł spółdzielni.

   The pitch where we spent the whole of middle school? I was sure it was the co-op's idea.

   Tu jest odpowiedź prezesa: „Wobec licznych pism pani Stefanii zarząd przychyla się do wniosku”. Czyli zrobiła to dla świętego spokoju.

   Here's the chairman's reply: 'In view of Mrs Stefania's numerous letters, the board grants the request.' So she did it for a bit of peace and quiet.

    Dla spokoju? To czemu co sobotę siadała z termosem przy boisku i oglądała nasze mecze? Ona nam po prostu kibicowała.

    For peace and quiet? Then why did she sit by the pitch with a thermos every Saturday and watch our matches? She was simply cheering us on.

    No to mamy mowę: skargi, boisko i na koniec, jak należy, „Cześć jej pamięci”. Napiszę ją przez kalkę, a kopię złożę w spółdzielni.

    Then we've got our speech: the complaints, the pitch and, to finish, as is proper, 'Honour to her memory.' I'll write it out with carbon paper and file the copy with the co-op.
