   Diano, są recenzje. Pierwsza chwali, a druga zaczyna się tak: „Autorzy, nie uwzględniwszy pływów, nie mogą twierdzić, że foki wychodzą na brzeg zależnie od pory dnia”.

   Diana, the reviews are in. The first one's full of praise, and the second one begins like this: 'Having failed to take the tides into account, the authors cannot claim that the seals haul out according to the time of day.'

   Pływów? W Bałtyku? Przecież tu Księżyc podnosi wodę najwyżej o kilka centymetrów, więcej robi byle wiatr.

   Tides? In the Baltic? The Moon raises the water here by a few centimetres at most; any old wind does more than that.

   No właśnie. Facet bada chyba foki na Morzu Wattowym, gdzie przy odpływie wylegują się na mieliznach. Odpiszę mu, że pomylił morza.

   Exactly. The guy must study seals in the Wadden Sea, where they lie about on the sandbanks at low tide. I'll write back and tell him he's got the wrong sea.

   Tylko nie tym tonem: w odpowiedzi na recenzję najpierw się dziękuje, a błędy wytyka się potem. Zatem: „Dziękujemy Recenzentowi za cenną uwagę”.

   Just not in that tone: in a response to reviewers you thank them first and point out their mistakes afterwards. So: 'We thank the Reviewer for this valuable comment.'

   Cenną? No dobrze: „Dziękujemy za cenną uwagę, jednakże amplituda pływów na południowym Bałtyku wynosi zaledwie kilka centymetrów”. I na koniec wykrzyknik.

   Valuable? Fine: 'Thank you for this valuable comment; however, the tidal range in the southern Baltic is a mere few centimetres.' And an exclamation mark at the end.

   Bez wykrzyknika. Ale czemu on w ogóle wpadł na pływy? Zajrzę do naszych metod.

   No exclamation mark. But why did he even think of tides? I'll have a look at our methods section.

   Po co? Metody pisałem ja, przeczytawszy chyba sto artykułów o fokach, więc są bez zarzutu.

   What for? I wrote the methods, after reading about a hundred papers on seals, so they're beyond reproach.

   O rany. Wziąłem ten akapit z doktoratu, który robiłem w Holandii, i zapomniałem go przerobić. Czyli recenzent czytał uważniej niż ja.

   Oh no. I took that paragraph from the PhD I did in the Netherlands and forgot to rework it. So the reviewer read it more carefully than I did.

    Uważniej niż my oboje. Wobec tego pomyliłeś morza ty, a nie on, i to ściągając od samego siebie. Trzeba mu jakoś ładnie przyznać rację.

    More carefully than both of us. So it was you who got the wrong sea, not him, and by copying from yourself, no less. We'll have to admit he's right, nicely somehow.
