   Please, have a seat. Before we get down to business, let me hand you an aide-mémoire, that is, a written reminder.

   Przypomnienie? Spoko, pani ambasador, ja tylko na chwilkę: od stycznia albo czynsz rośnie o siedemset złotych, albo sprzedaję mieszkanie.

   Cudzego blefu wysłuchuje się z uprzejmym zainteresowaniem, to pierwsza lekcja dyplomacji. Moja propozycja kompromisowa: trzysta złotych podwyżki, ale dopiero po naprawie okna i kranu oraz usunięciu grzyba.

   You listen to the other side's bluff with polite interest: that's the first lesson in diplomacy. My compromise proposal: a rise of three hundred złoty, but only once the window and the tap have been fixed and the mould removed.

    Three hundred instead of seven hundred? It's not exactly a dream deal, but I can see I won't get a better offer. I'll sort out an addendum to the lease at the weekend.
