Day 30: The Judge from Our Tenement
In a corridor of the district court in Gliwice, Bożena (A), who is suing a roofer who took her money and never fixed her roof, waits for the hearing with her daughter Julia (B), a trainee lawyer who is representing her.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Julka, when the judge asks about that dachdeker, that roofer, do I tell it in our Silesian or in your lawyer-speak?

Najlepiej literacką polszczyzną, mamo. O ile wiem, sędzia nie jest stąd i nie musi znać godki.
Standard Polish would be best, Mum. As far as I know, the judge isn't from round here and needn't understand Silesian.

Not from round here? Judge Kandzia is Mrs Kandzia's boy from our old tenement, I've known him since he was a nipper.

Mum, that changes everything. I have to report that a circumstance exists which may cast justified doubt on the judge's impartiality.

Impartiality, my foot. When he was ten, I took his slingshot off him because he was shooting at my dad's pigeons.

Czyli jeśli już, to jest uprzedzony do ciebie. Tym bardziej składam wniosek o wyłączenie.
So if anything, he's biased against you. All the more reason to file a motion for his recusal.

No need. The next day he came round with flowers to say sorry, and he still drops in for a slice of kołocz on St Barbara's Day.
