Day 33: Hania Versus Grandpa, Three Nil
In Grandpa Henryk's flat in Tczew, on the evening of his funeral, Ewa (A), her husband Paweł (B) and their daughter Hania (C), nine, sort through his things.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

I got stuck at the second sentence, on 'having been born in Tczew', and after that, not another word.

Because Grandpa was bad at draughts. But don't tell anyone, it would make him sad.

Słaby? W osiemdziesiątym piątym został mistrzem kolejarzy w warcabach, i to bez jednej porażki.
Bad at them? In 1985 he became the railwaymen's draughts champion, and without losing a single game.

Czyli przegrywał specjalnie. Na ostatniej stronie jest dopisek: „Dawać jej wygrywać, dopóki nie zacznie wygrywać sama”.
So he lost on purpose. There's a note on the last page: 'Let her win until she starts winning on her own.'

Ze mną też przegrywał specjalnie, tylko ja, przegrawszy pierwszy raz naprawdę, rzuciłem planszą o ścianę.
He lost to me on purpose too, only the first time I lost for real, I threw the board at the wall.
