Day 7: Onboarding a Purist

In an open-plan office in Katowice, team manager Iwona (A) welcomes Bartek (B), a new copywriter fresh from a Polish studies degree, on his first morning.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Bartek, welcome aboard! Onboarding to kick off, then a call with the team and a feedback deadline by EOD.

    Rozumiem, iż najpierw czeka mnie wdrożenie, po czym rozmowa z zespołem. A reszta po polsku?

    I take it that first I'm to be inducted, after which there's a conversation with the team. And the rest in Polish?

    Jasne: jak ktoś przypisze panu taska, to pan go ownuje, dowozi na ASAP-a i daje update'a.

    Sure: when someone assigns you a task, you own it, deliver it ASAP and give an update.

    Przyjąwszy zadanie, wykonuję je niezwłocznie, jak gdyby zależał od niego los firmy?

    Having accepted a task, I carry it out without delay, as though the fate of the company depended on it?

    No właśnie, przecież mówię po ludzku. A jak się pan nie wyrobi, to eskaluje pan do mnie.

    Exactly, I'm speaking plain Polish, aren't I? And if you can't make it in time, you escalate to me.

    Eskaluję, czyli przekazuję sprawę wyżej. Ośmielę się jednak zauważyć, iż „ownować” nie figuruje w żadnym słowniku.

    Escalate, that is, refer the matter upwards. I would venture to point out, however, that 'ownować' doesn't appear in any dictionary.

    Panie Bartku, u nas liczą się KPI, a nie słowniki. Kto pana w ogóle rekrutował?

    Bartek, what counts here is KPIs, not dictionaries. Who recruited you, anyway?

    Pani, osobiście, w zeszły czwartek. Obejrzawszy moje CV, powiedziała pani, iż firma szuka kogoś, kto „dowiezie” polszczyznę.

    You did, personally, last Thursday. Having looked at my CV, you said the company was looking for someone who could 'deliver' proper Polish.

    No to trafiona, zatopiona. Pierwszy task: słownik korpo-polski, dowiezie pan na piątek, najlepiej na ASAP-a.

    Well, touché. First task: a corporate-to-Polish dictionary, delivered by Friday, ASAP ideally.
