Day 8: Airbnb for Allotments

In the dining car of a Pendolino from Wrocław to Warsaw, Andrzej (A), a business angel, turns to Szymon (B), a young founder who has been rehearsing his pitch out loud the whole way.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Sorry to butt in, but I've been listening to your pitch since Wrocław. Airbnb for allotment holders, right?

    Zgadza się. Blisko milion działek, z czego trzy czwarte świeci pustkami od poniedziałku do piątku.

    That's right. Nearly a million allotment plots, and three-quarters of them stand empty from Monday to Friday.

    A w weekendy siedzą tam emeryci z sekatorami, którzy obcego na grządkę nie wpuszczą. Ile pan chce i za ile procent?

    And at weekends they're full of pensioners with pruning shears who won't let a stranger near their vegetable patch. How much do you want, and for what percentage?

    Półtora miliona złotych za jedną dziesiątą. Wycena post-money piętnaście milionów, czyli wręcz skromna.

    One and a half million złoty for a tenth. A post-money valuation of fifteen million, which is modest, if anything.

    Skromna to jest moja działka w Wawrze. Ilu ma pan aktywnych użytkowników, tak szczerze?

    What's modest is my allotment in Wawer. How many active users have you got, honestly?

    Czterystu, w tym moja mama i pół zarządu ogrodu „Malwa”. Ale co miesiąc rośniemy o jedną trzecią.

    Four hundred, including my mum and half the committee of the 'Malwa' allotment garden. But we're growing by a third every month.

    Wzrost przy czterystu osobach to anegdota, nie trakcja. Dam pół miliona, ale za jedną czwartą.

    Growth on four hundred people is an anecdote, not traction. I'll give you half a million, but for a quarter.

    Jedna czwarta za pół bańki? To już nie anioł biznesu, szanowny panie, tylko lichwiarz w garniturze.

    A quarter for half a mil? That's not a business angel, my good sir, that's a loan shark in a suit.

    Lichwiarz w garniturze dorzuci jeszcze swoją działkę na pilotaż. Do Centralnej dwadzieścia minut, proszę się decydować.

    The loan shark in a suit will throw in his own allotment for the pilot as well. Twenty minutes to Warszawa Centralna: make up your mind.
