Day 90 of 105

Day 90: A Sample of Three

In the car on the way home to Ciechanów from a startup accelerator's demo day in Warsaw, where she has just pitched her business to investors, Dagna (B) has it out with her father Remigiusz (A), a retired statistician who was sitting in the audience.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

  1. A

Don't be cross, sweetheart, but when I heard 'two thirds of respondents' from the stage, thirty years at Statistics Poland wouldn't let me keep quiet.

  2. B

And that's why you stood up in front of two hundred people and announced that my research sample was three people round the Sunday dinner table?

  3. A

A nie? Zapytałaś, kto zapłaciłby czterdzieści złotych za słoik domowych gołąbków przywieziony kurierem. Dwie ręce w górę, jedna nie.

Well, wasn't it? You asked who'd pay forty złoty for a jar of home-made cabbage rolls delivered by courier. Two hands went up, one didn't.

  4. B

Your vote doesn't count, Dad. You're not the target group, you're the supplier: you're the one who makes those cabbage rolls!

  5. A

Czyli sto procent z dwóch osób, jeszcze lepiej. Gdybyś mnie była zapytała przed występem, byłbym ci zrobił badanie na próbie tysiąca osób.

So that's a hundred per cent of two people. Even better. Had you asked me before your pitch, I'd have done you a study on a sample of a thousand.

  6. B

And had you kept quiet, the investors wouldn't have been in stitches for a minute and a half.

  7. A

Śmiali się, bo trafiłem w sedno. Przed moim pytaniem pół sali siedziało w telefonach, a potem wszyscy pytali o marżę.

They laughed because I hit the nail on the head. Before my question half the room was glued to their phones, and afterwards everybody was asking about the margin.

  8. B

Because they thought it was a comedy act. Wait, an email from that grey-haired guy from the fund: they want to pick up the conversation about the seed round.

  9. A

No i proszę. A godzinę temu mówiłaś, że pogrzebałem ci firmę.

There you go. And an hour ago you were saying I'd buried your company.

  10. B

Jest drugi akapit: „o ile badanie rynku przeprowadzi ten statystyk z trzeciego rzędu”. Pytają o twoją stawkę.

There's a second paragraph: 'provided that the market research is done by that statistician in the third row'. They're asking about your rate.

  11. A

Napisz, że biorę trzy czwarte procenta udziałów. A od ciebie mniej: jeden niedzielny obiad w miesiącu, bez ankiet.

Tell them I'll take three quarters of a per cent of the shares. And from you I'll take less: one Sunday dinner a month, no surveys.
