   Good afternoon, do you have Schopenhauer's 'The Art of Being Right', by any chance? Tonight I'm on a political talk show for the first time, live.

   What a bestseller: that's the third copy this week. Before every show like that, someone from the town council suddenly discovers German philosophy.

   No wonder. I'm up against a councillor who for twenty years hasn't let anyone in the studio finish a sentence.

   Gdy brakuje argumentów, przechodzi się do wycieczek osobistych. W studiu zwykle w dwudziestej minucie, po pierwszym „ja panu nie przerywałem”.

   When you run out of arguments, you get personal. In the studio it's usually around the twentieth minute, just after the first 'I didn't interrupt you!'.

   Isn't that every episode in a nutshell? My opponent opens with that trick, and then takes offence when people interrupt him.

   In that case, some free advice: short sentences, a calm voice, and let him talk himself out. The camera loves whoever stays quiet while the other one shouts.

   Wherever did you learn all that? You talk as if you'd spent half your life in that studio.

    Bo przesiedziałam. Dwanaście lat prowadziłam ten program, a odszedłszy z telewizji, otworzyłam księgarnię, bo tu nikt nikomu nie przerywa.

    Because I did. I hosted that show for twelve years, and after leaving television I opened a bookshop, because here nobody interrupts anybody.
