Day 102: The Old Edition Will Do
During office hours at a university in Wałbrzych, first-year student Sara (A) asks her lecturer, Dr Alina Sadowska (B), about the textbook she needs for the exam.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Pani doktor, czy nowe wydanie pani podręcznika jest obowiązkowe? Kosztuje sto sześćdziesiąt złotych.
Dr Sadowska, is the new edition of your textbook compulsory? It costs a hundred and sixty złoty.
-
B
Oficjalnie tak, a między nami mówiąc, od starego różni się głównie okładką i ceną.
Officially, yes, but between you and me, it mostly differs from the old one in the cover and the price.
-
A
Czyli mogę pożyczyć stare od siostry? Zdawała u pani trzy lata temu.
So I can borrow the old one from my sister? She took your exam three years ago.
-
B
Może pani, tylko niech pani tego nie rozpowiada po całym wydziale. Wydawnictwo by mi nie podziękowało.
You can, just don't go spreading it around the whole faculty. The publisher wouldn't thank me for it.
-
A
A pani na tym nie traci? Przecież to pani książka.
But don't you lose out? It's your book, after all.
-
B
Ja stracę dwa złote, pani natomiast zaoszczędzi sto sześćdziesiąt. Prosty rachunek.
I'll lose two złoty, whereas you'll save a hundred and sixty. Simple maths.
-
A
To może chociaż poproszę o autograf? Oczywiście w starym wydaniu.
Then could I at least have your autograph? In the old edition, of course.
