Day 103: Grandad Pulled Her Plaits

During a break at a primary school in August贸w, Szymek (A) shows his classmate Nela (B) an old photo he has brought in for a class project on their grandparents' childhood.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Nela, look, this is my grandad's class. The skinny one in the striped jumper is him.

    Let me see! Wait, my gran's got exactly the same photo in her album!

    Niemo偶liwe. To kt贸ra to twoja babcia?

    No way. So which one's your gran?

    Ta z warkoczami, za kt贸r膮 siedzi tw贸j dziadek. Babcia m贸wi, 偶e ci膮gn膮艂 j膮 za warkocze.

    The one with plaits, the one your grandad's sitting behind. Gran says he used to pull her plaits.

    Serio? A gdyby si臋 potem pobrali, to byliby艣my kuzynami?

    Seriously? So if they'd got married later on, would we be cousins?

  6. B

    Gdyby si臋 pobrali, to w og贸le by nas nie by艂o. Na szcz臋艣cie babcia wola艂a mojego dziadka.

    If they'd got married, we wouldn't exist at all. Luckily Gran liked my grandad better.
