Day 107: The MC's Own Wedding

At a wedding fair in Ostróda, Joachim (A) hosts a panel on the oczepiny, the traditional midnight ritual and party games at Polish weddings, with his guests Jowita (B), a wedding planner, and Aleksander (C), a wedding MC.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.

    Pani Jowito, czy dzisiejsze pary młode jeszcze chcą oczepin?

    Jowita, do today's couples still want the oczepiny?

    Coraz rzadziej. Mimo że babcie nalegają, wiele par od razu z nich rezygnuje.

    Less and less. Even though the grannies insist, lots of couples drop them straight away.

    Niech pani nie przesadza. Wszyscy kręcą nosem, a o północy bawią się najlepiej.

    Don't exaggerate. Everyone turns their nose up, and then at midnight they have the most fun.

    Wujkowie tak. Reszta ucieka na taras, żeby nikt nie kazał jej tańczyć z balonem.

    The uncles do. Everyone else escapes to the terrace so nobody makes them dance with a balloon.

    Panie Aleksandrze, a na pana własnym weselu były oczepiny?

    Aleksander, and did you have the oczepiny at your own wedding?

    Nie było. Chociaż miałem już za sobą ze sto wesel, żona postawiła sprawę jasno: albo ona, albo oczepiny.

    No, we didn't. Even though I'd done about a hundred weddings by then, my wife made it clear: it was her or the oczepiny.

    Może pan to powtórzyć? Nagram i będę puszczać babciom.

    Could you say that again? I'll record it and play it to the grannies.
