Day 109: Grounded by One Ear

At an ear, nose and throat clinic in Rumia, Kalina (A), a young management consultant just back from a business trip to Milan, sees Dr Bernard Zalewski (B) about her ear.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Od powrotu z Mediolanu nie słyszę na lewe ucho. Stewardesa radziła, żebym żuła gumę.

    Since I got back from Milan, I can't hear out of my left ear. The flight attendant advised me to chew gum.

    Przy takim katarze guma nic nie da. Przez dwa tygodnie żadnych lotów.

    With a cold like this, gum won't do a thing. No flying for two weeks.

    W poniedziałek mam spotkanie w Sztokholmie. Szef kazał, żebym tam była za wszelką cenę.

    I've got a meeting in Stockholm on Monday. My boss said I had to be there at all costs.

    Gdyby pani teraz poleciała, przy lądowaniu płakałaby pani z bólu.

    If you flew now, you'd be crying with pain when the plane landed.

  5. A

    To co mam zrobić? Napisać szefowi, że boli mnie ucho?

    So what am I supposed to do? Email my boss to say my ear hurts?

    Zalecam prom. Co wieczór odpływa z Gdyni do Karlskrony, a dalej jest pociąg.

    I recommend the ferry. There's one from Gdynia to Karlskrona every evening, and then a train from there.

    Noc na promie i pół dnia w pociągu? Ciekawe, czy szef wykupi mi kajutę.

    A night on the ferry and half a day on the train? I wonder if my boss will book me a cabin.
