Day 125: Stamps for a Chat

Outside their block of flats in Turek, Mr Zygfryd (A), a pensioner, stops his neighbour Elwina (B), who works at the local post office, on her way home.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Pani Elwino, co pani taka nie w sosie? Znowu ten nowy kierownik?

    Elwina, why so glum? That new manager again?

    A kto inny? Kazał, żebym nie gadała z klientami, bo rośnie kolejka.

    Who else? He told me not to chat with customers, because it makes the queue longer.

    Z klientami? Ja do pani chodzę po znaczki, choć od lat do nikogo nie piszę.

    Not chat with customers? I come to you for stamps, even though I haven't written to anyone in years.

    No właśnie. Mówi, że płacą mi za to, co sprzedam, a nie za pogaduszki.

    Exactly. He says I'm paid for what I sell, not for chit-chat.

    A ten kierownik to przypadkiem nie taki młody, rudy, z wąsikiem?

    This manager wouldn't be a young redhead with a little moustache, by any chance?

    Zgadza siÄ™. A skÄ…d pan go zna?

    That's him. How do you know him?

  7. A

    To mój wnuk. Niech się pani nie martwi, w niedzielę przychodzi na rosół.

    He's my grandson. Don't you worry, he's coming round for chicken soup on Sunday.
