At Sunday lunch in her grandmother's flat in Słupca, Liza (A) sits down at the table as her grandmother Ryszarda (B) brings in the pierogi.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Babciu, pachnie pierogami! Tylko pamiętasz, że ja już nie jem mięsa?
Gran, it smells of pierogi! But you do remember I don't eat meat any more?
-
B
Pamiętam, dlatego zrobiłam ruskie. Chociaż gdybyś jadła mięso, nie byłabyś taka blada.
I remember, that's why I made the potato and cheese ones. Though if you ate meat, you wouldn't be so pale.

Mimo że nie jem mięsa od roku, wyniki mam idealne. Biorę tylko witaminę B12.
Even though I haven't eaten meat for a year, my test results are perfect. I only take vitamin B12.

B
No dobrze. Za moich czasów mięso i tak jadło się od święta, a jakoś żyjemy.
Well, all right. In my day we only had meat on special occasions anyway, and we're still here.

A
No widzisz! To nałóż mi od razu podwójną porcję.
There you go! Then give me a double helping straight away.

B
Proszę bardzo, polałam je skwarkami. Przecież słonina to nie mięso.
Here you are, I've topped them with crackling. Pork fat isn't meat, after all.
