Day 139: An Exhibition of Jumpers

At the cultural centre in Olkusz, Malwina (A) takes her grandmother Janina (B) round a small exhibition of large reproductions of Roman Opa艂ka's paintings.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Gran, this is Opa艂ka, the numbers painter. He painted them for over forty years.

    Same liczby? A co ja mam podziwia膰, skoro nie da si臋 ich przeczyta膰?

    Nothing but numbers? So what am I supposed to admire, if you can't read them?

    Z bliska si臋 da. Zacz膮艂 od jedynki w sze艣膰dziesi膮tym pi膮tym roku.

    You can, close up. He started with number one in 1965.

    Tyle lat to samo? A dziadek m贸wi艂, 偶e to ja jestem uparta.

    All those years doing the same thing? And your grandad used to say I was the stubborn one.

    Zobacz, im p贸藕niejsze p艂贸tno, tym ja艣niejsze t艂o. Pod koniec liczby prawie znika艂y.

    Look, the later the canvas, the paler the background. Towards the end, the numbers almost disappeared.

    No prosz臋. To ja te偶 jestem artystk膮: od sze艣膰dziesi臋ciu lat licz臋 oczka na drutach.

    Well, well. Then I'm an artist too: I've been counting stitches on my knitting needles for sixty years.

    To zr贸bmy ci wystaw臋 swetr贸w. Po艂owa rodziny i tak chodzi w twoich eksponatach.

    Then let's put on an exhibition of your jumpers. Half the family goes around in your exhibits anyway.
