Day 140: Learn to Make Coffee First

Over coffee in Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Cyprian (A), who has just become a shift supervisor at a printing works, tells his friend Karina (B) how his first week went.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Od poniedziałku jestem kierownikiem zmiany i mam w zespole pięciu panów po pięćdziesiątce.

    Since Monday I've been a shift supervisor, and I've got five men in their fifties on my team.

    Gratulacje! I jak, słuchają cię czy traktują jak małolata?

    Congratulations! So how's it going, do they listen to you, or treat you like a kid?

    Kazałem panu Gienkowi, żeby ustawił maszynę, a on mi na to, żebym się najpierw nauczył parzyć kawę.

    I told Mr Gienek to set up the machine, and he told me to learn to make coffee first.

    Nie rób z tego wojny. Poproś go, żeby pokazał ci wszystko, co wie o maszynach.

    Don't turn it into a war. Ask him to show you everything he knows about the machines.

    Tak zrobiłem, przy wszystkich. Był tak zachwycony, że od razu przejął dowodzenie.

    I did, in front of everyone. He was so delighted that he took charge straight away.

    No to chyba dobrze? Poczuł się doceniony.

    Well, that's good, isn't it? He felt appreciated.

    Aż za bardzo. Teraz on rządzi, a ja parzę wszystkim kawę.

    A bit too much. Now he's in charge, and I make coffee for everyone.
