Day 145: Don't Turn Round

In the café on the ground floor of the office block in Lubin where she works, Ksenia (A), a regular, orders a coffee from the barista, Wanessa (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Poproszę najmocniejszą kawę, jaką pani ma. Za kwadrans mam na górze rozmowę o pracę.

    The strongest coffee you've got, please. I've got a job interview upstairs in a quarter of an hour.

  2. B

    Na pani miejscu wzięłabym słabszą. Im więcej kawy, tym bardziej drżą ręce.

    If I were you, I'd have a weaker one. The more coffee, the more your hands shake.

  3. A

    To poproszę słabszą. Tylko niech pani nikomu nie mówi, bo szef nie wie, że szukam pracy.

    A weaker one, then. Just don't tell anyone, because my boss doesn't know I'm looking for a job.

  4. B

    Spokojnie, jestem dyskretna. Ale niech siÄ™ pani nie odwraca, bo pani szef siedzi przy oknie.

    Don't worry, I'm discreet. But don't turn round, because your boss is sitting by the window.

  5. A

    Niemożliwe, przecież wziął dziś urlop na żądanie. Zresztą ja też.

    He can't be, he took the day off today at short notice. So did I, for that matter.

  6. B

    Zdaje się, że z tego samego powodu co pani. Zamówił już trzecią melisę.

    It looks like it's for the same reason as you. He's already ordered his third lemon balm tea.
