Day 144: Nine Coffees Turned Down

On a scorching July day on a housing estate in Racibórz, Gracjan (A), a young volunteer, rings the doorbell of Mrs Regina (B), who lives alone on the fourth floor.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Polish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Polish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Dzień dobry, jestem wolontariuszem. W upały sprawdzamy, czy starsi mieszkańcy osiedla mają wodę.

    Good afternoon, I'm a volunteer. When it's this hot, we check that the older people on the estate have got water.

  2. B

    Mam, ale piję tylko odrobinę, bo nie chce mi się pić. W moim wieku to normalne.

    I have, but I only drink a little, because I'm not thirsty. That's normal at my age.

    Właśnie dlatego lekarze zalecają pić regularnie: z wiekiem słabnie uczucie pragnienia.

    That's exactly why doctors recommend drinking regularly: the sense of thirst gets weaker with age.

    Mówi pan jak moja córka, a sam pan jest czerwony jak burak. Kiedy pan ostatnio coś pił?

    You sound just like my daughter, and you're as red as a beetroot yourself. When did you last drink anything?

    Rano, przed wyjściem. Odwiedziłem już dziewięciu mieszkańców i u każdego uprzejmie odmawiałem kawy.

    This morning, before I left. I've already visited nine residents and politely turned down coffee at every one.

    Niech pan siada, zaraz przyniosę wody. Starszej pani nie wolno odmawiać.

    Sit down, I'll bring you some water right away. You're not allowed to say no to an old lady.

  7. A

    Dobrze, ale skoro nie wolno odmawiać, to pani też wypije ze mną szklankę.

    All right, but since saying no isn't allowed, you'll have a glass with me too.
